Rats are widely known as pests, animals you'd never want to find swimming in your toilet. They spread diseases, and are running dirty in the streets. This is true, but only because they have no other choice. They are high in population, where are they supposed to go? If you ask, I'm sure most people find rats scary and/or disgusting.
On the other hand, there are also people who love rats (me). They keep them as pets, and cherish their company. Growing up I've had in total 4 rats. Rats are so kind, and calm. They are also extremely intelligent. Rats are able to learn tricks just as dogs are. They can grow extremely close to other rats and their human families, and they display great amounts of affection towards them.
In my opinion, my rats have been the best pets I've ever had. I even currently have a dog whom I love to death, just with my rats I feel as if I had a stronger bond.
They are so kind and loving. In fact, a study showed that most rats value friendship over food, something very rare in the animal kingdom. They put one rat into a transparent box, and a piece of chocolate in another box. The rat in the box, was obviously in distress. Then they put another rat outside both boxes. This rat was able to choose which box to open, and it chose to open the box with the rat, free it, then it went for the chocolate, and shared it with the free rat.
Rats have a naturally gentle and friendly nature. It may seem weird, actually enjoying the company of a stereotyped, disease filled ball of fur (which isn't true by the way). But when you connect and bond with a rat, it gives you such a happy feeling that I can't even fully describe.
If you're considering on getting a pet, I'd highly recommend a rat. They are super easy to care for, and you get the same kind of love and loyalty you would get from owning a dog.
