A while ago I heard of an animal will unreal abilities, the Mantis Shrimp. I didn't think it was real, just a rumor from the internet. I did some further research on the shrimp, and turns out they are infact, real and live in shallow tropical and sub-tropical marine habitats.
The things this crustacean can do, I didn't think were possible. I had only heard of these skills in fiction books.
We humans have 3 colour receptive cones in our eyes. Green, blue and red. Butterflies have an even bigger number of cones, 5. They have a massive spectrum of colours, more than our brains are even able to process. Butterflies almost have the biggest number of colour receptive cones in any species, but then are beat by the Mantis Shrimp who has 16!!! A rainbow that we see, only stems from our three cones, imagine how it looks stemming from 16.
This unique creature seems like the unicorn from underwater, majestic and beautiful. But they aren't unicorns. More like dragons.
This shrimp is one of the most creatively violent animals on earth.
It is armed with two raptorial appendages on the front of its body. One strike from it's spears is 50 times faster than the blink of a human eye. It's speed is also equal to that of a .22 caliber bullet. If humans were able to throw at 1/10 of that speed, we could throw a ball into orbit. If the speed wasn't enough, they can strike prey with up to 1,500 newtons of force (335 lbs).
As if having super powers, the speed of their limbs is so fast, the water around them boils. In the process, cavitation bubbles are formed. When these collapse, they produce an undersea shockwave. They cause small implosions of heat, light and sound.
The shrimp mainly uses dismemberment to kill its prey. It smashes other animals to pieces, ripping apart mollusks, crabs, oysters and octupi.
This animals limbs and body are so tough, scientists have been researching its cell structure for use in the development of body armor for combat troops.
You most likely have never seen a Mantis Shrimp unless you live on the coats of Hawaii or somewhere tropical. This is because aquariums don't typically keep these shrimp for two reasons. 1. The mantis shrimp tend to slaughter every other animal that it is housed with. 2. The shrimps are able to break through the aquarium glass. This tiny animal can do so much.
I never knew anything like this even existed. But now that I know, it is one of my favourite animals. It is bright, yet dark at the same time. I find it incredibly beautiful.
